The Grid Tool works with almost any planner or journal. But are you wondering exactly which? I’ve listed all the ones I know about in a Google Spreadsheet, but here are some of the most common.
The Grid Tool Journal and Notebook Compatibility
I designed The Grid Tool in several variations for maximum compatibility with popular standard-size notebooks, journals, bullet journals, and DIY planners.
In general, if your notebook or planner:
- has plain/blank pages OR the symmetrical grid spacing increment matches (for example, 5mm), AND
- the width of a single page is EQUAL to or LARGER than The Grid Tool‘s horizontal (width) measurements AND
- the height of a single page is EQUAL to or LARGER than The Grid Tool‘s vertical (height) measurements
…The Grid Tool is fully compatible with your journal, notebook, or planner.
Here are a couple more specific examples:
This Size A5 Leuchtturm1917 Medium, Dotted journal is 5.75″ x 8.25″ and each page has 28 dots printed horizontally (27 spaces) x 37 dots printed vertically (36 spaces). The Grid Tool ~ 5mm – Standard Size A5 will allow you to measure the entire height of the dotted part of the page, and 26 (out of 27) spaces of the width. This allows you to decide if you’d like to leave a 5mm margin on either the left or right edge of the page.
However, The Grid Tool ~ 5mm – Standard Size A5 is NOT compatible with the Piccadilly Dot Grid Essential Notebook, because, although the Piccadilly has more than enough dots vertically on each page (41), it only has 25 dots horizontally. The Grid Tool ~ 5mm – Size A5 needs at least 27 dots horizontally in order to fit.

The Grid Tool 5mm – Standard Size A4
- Dimensions: Approximately 1.75 x 10.625 in or 45 x 270mm
- Designed for maximum compatibility with 5x5mm grid size A4 (approximately 8.3 x 11.7 in or 210 x 297mm) AND US Letter size (8.5 x 11 in or 215.9 x 279.4 mm) paper, journals, planners, organizers, or notebooks.
- Works best with blank pages or equally square 5x5mm dot, line, cross, etc. grid spacing patterns. On a 5x5mm pattern, it can divide 1976 spaces (one space=5mm) in an area: 38×52 spaces (39×53 dots).

- Designed for maximum compatibility with 5x5mm grid size B5 (approximately 6.9 x 9.8 in or 176 x 250mm) paper, journals, planners, organizers, or notebooks.
- Works best with blank pages or equally square 5x5mm dot, line, cross, etc. grid spacing patterns. On a 5x5mm pattern, it can divide 1472 spaces (one space=5mm) in an area: 32×46 spaces (33×47 dots).
